The Perfect Location

Casa Lagajo is situated in the quiet hamlet of Quinta Do Rosal, 40 minutes from Faro airport and just a few minutes from many of the Algarve’s most stunning beaches.

Quinta do Rosal is comprised of around 25 private villas and townhouses, set within the Lombos countryside between the towns of Lagoa (5 minutes) and Carvoeiro (10 minutes).

In the centre of the hamlet is the reception, where friendly and helpful hosts are on hand to answer any queries and help you make the most of your stay, including booking excursions, bikes, tennis coaching or any of the other activities on offer.

Brasserie Rosal is situated next to reception just a short stroll from Casa Lagajo.  There is also a large communal pool, tennis court, crazy golf, books and DVDs for loan at reception as well as other games.

The Property

Casa Lagajo is a spacious and well furnished four bedroom villa, with an additional twin room off the open plan lounge.  There is a roof terrace upstairs, and a large patio beside the private U shaped pool.  There is a very private and well maintained garden surrounding the house.

The entrance hall opens on to the main living area which is open plan and features massive comfy sofas, chairs and large dining table.  A sliding door opens onto the outside dining area and poolside patio.

There is a large double bedroom downstairs with a super king size bed and en-suite featuring a large walk in shower and his and hers basins.  The window looks onto the private and tranquil back garden.  There is also a seperate downstairs toilet.

Upstairs is another double bedroom with super king size bed, en-suite (bath with shower) and sliding doors onto a sunny roof terrace overlooking the pool.  The terrace can also be accessed via steps from the pool patio.

There are two further twin bedrooms upstairs, one with access to the terrace, the other looking out over the back garden.  These can be made up as doubles on request.

A family bathroom (bath with shower) completes the accommodation.

Outside

From both the living area and kitchen you step out to the pool patio and BBQ area, which has a covered dining space with a large dining table (seats 10).  This leads to the outdoor patio featuring a gorgeous cork tree beside the U shaped pool*.  There is access to the private garden off the patio and also stairs leading up to the roof terrace.  The grounds are well planted with cork trees, shrubs, flowers and Aloe Vera, and are exceptionally well tended.  There is a decked area in the back garden perfect for enjoying the tranquility and local wildlife, includng Love Birds, Hoopoes and the strange sounding and beautiful Golden Oriele.  It’s a magical and secure place for children to potter and explore.

*Casa Lagajo has a secure pool fence which can be installed upon request.  Please let us know if you require this in advance of your visit.

Getting There

Casa Lagajo is 40 minutes drive from Faro airport, and there are a wide range of car hire options.  Car hire is  around ~£100 per week off season (including Christmas and Easter), and ~£200 in the summer for a reasonable sized family car.  It’s cheaper if you book well in advance.

We use www.zestcarrental.com to search the best prices and then tend to choose a car from company ‘Travel Rent’ because we’ve used them many times, the cars are good and they don’t charge much for child seats and other extras.  Pick up is easy just outside the front of the airport and drop off at the same place.

Beaches

Casa Lagajo is positioned in between many of the Algarve’s most attractive beaches.  Within 15 minutes drive are endlessly long and open stretches of pristine beach at Armacao, Salgados, and Alvor, perfect for long walks.  Just five minutes away are the many smaller, pretty beaches and coves including the famous Benagil caves.

The coastline in the area is fantastic and varied, and all within a few minutes drive or a 20 minute cycle.

There’s a great 6 mile run/cycle taking in Benagil, Marinha and Albandeira beaches before making your way back along the quiet lanes to Casa Lagajo.  The following beaches are a few of our favourites, but there are many more which we haven’t yet visited despite coming to the Algarve for 20 years!

Marinha (5 mins)

Medium sized beach with rock pools, 100 shallow steps to the bottom, but don’t be put off, even the route down is pretty and shaded and there are stunning views from the top.  Ice cream, beers and fresh fruit usually available from little vans at the top.

Albandeira (5 mins)

A little lane leads to this small beach with a great rock pool in the middle, and a cave leading to a hidden beach with a natural arch. Check tide times and take care not to get stranded on the other side by the tide!

Benagil (5 mins)

An authentic Portuguese fishing village with a few excellent restaurants, and a cafe on the very pretty beach. From the beach you can swim or paddle around the headland to the Benagil caves, where you can enter and land on a beach within a spectacular grotto. This is one of the most amazing natural sights and we never tire of visiting. Boat tours can be taken in authentic Portuguese fishing boats which can take you deeper into the cave labyrinths on this part of the Algarve coastline.

Armacao de Pera (15 mins)

Long beach in the more built up town of Armacao, but you can park here and walk up the beach leading on to the nature reserve and lagoon at Salgados. This is great for a long walk, and restaurants in Armacao are open all year.

Alvor (15 mins)

Long beach and excellent board walk over marshlands. Parachutists land here from Lagos aerodrome. If you like air experiences you can take a microlite flight from Lagos (20 mins away) and fly over the rosary compass at Sagres.

Local Area

Lagoa is the closest town and has everything you need in terms of amenities. There are three good supermarkets within 10 minutes drive, we tend to use Intermarche and Apolonia. Intermarche has a huge fish and meat counter and a good takeaway pizza wagon outside which is handy if you’re feeling lazy! Both have excellent bakeries.

Carvoeiro is a busier beachside town 10 minutes away and very pretty. The boardwalk is a must! To get there, drive down towards Carvoeiro and park at the start of the boardwalk. Enjoy a ~1km stroll taking in the sea and cliff views along this fantastic timber structure which leads you directly down and into Carvoeiro which has many great restaurants, and plenty of small shops.

Water Parks

(closed in winter) Slide and Splash is our favourite and is possibly one of the best water parks in Europe. It’s just ten minutes from Casa Lagajo, and you can easily spend a day here, or pop back a couple of times. Slides range from tame to terrifying, a toddlers’ area with great water play, and there are also other activities including bird demonstrations and opportunities to engage with other wildlife. You can hire a locker for your phones and wallets, sun loungers for those who prefer to watch the action from afar, and there are places for lunch right in the centre of the park.

Monchique Mountains

If you do have an overcast day or just fancy taking a drive, the mountains are around 60 minutes away (to the top). As well as fantastic views you can really pick up on the Moorish influences with numerous pottery and tile sellers, and lots of great places to stop for Piri Piri Chicken. There are also opportunities to buy locally made wool garments including large rustic cardigans made in the mountains and extremely reasonably priced.

Golf

There are four good golf courses within a few minutes drive of Casa Lagajo and far more if you’re prepared to drive a little further.

Restaurants

There are so many good restaurants in the area so it’s impossible to list them all and frankly we’ve never gone far wrong.  The following are a few of our favourites to get you started.

Brasserie Rosal

- at the centre of the Quinta do Rosal hamlet just two minutes stroll from Casa Lagajo.  Run by extremely friendly hosts Nico and Andy, the food is Portuguese and European, with plenty of local produce beautifully cooked.  The tuna carpaccio and black pork cheeks are especially amazing, and chef Andy is always creating new dishes, while retaining space for firm favourites!  There is plenty of space for children to play within  your sight while you enjoy a relaxing dinner on the terrace.  There are also some games for them like a giant 'Connect 4' and a pool table.

O Litoral

- At the top of the road down into Benagil village.  A simple place within a few minutes of Casa Lagajo.  We like the rustic feel and the food is great.  Favourites are their clams, Portuguese steak and the grilled plaice.

O Rustico

- Also on the way down to Benagil, this has been revamped in recent years and offers a nice outside area off the road, great for kids to potter while you enjoy a relaxed and delicious dinner.  A little more ‘nouvelle Portuguese’, their tapas style dishes are absolutely delicious, and there's a nice bar area with a great wine selection.

O Algar

- Slightly upmarket, again on the way into Benagil, they have a lovely outside area and the menu includes plenty of locally landed fresh seafood and all of the typical Portuguese dishes you would expect from a great local venue.  Cataplanas, Portuguese steak, large and exotic looking fish, giant prawns...you won't go home hungry!

Take Away

O Cassoral

- A piri piri chicken place in Lagoa.  Very authentic and run by the same family for as long as we've been visiting.  You can eat in at simple tables, with solid table wine, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the bill!  Or we often get takeaway and eat back at the villa.

Intermarche pizza

- In recent years the car park at the local Intermarche has a pizza van, and as a pizza lover I can say these are pretty good and also a cheap take away if you find yourself too chilled out to light the BBQ.
